Bipolar disorder is an illness that causes people to have episodes of depression and mania. It usually develops in the late teens or early adulthood. As bipolar disorder can be very severe it is important to notify a doctor if you notice any symptoms of the disease in yourself, friends, or family. More than one study has found that people with bipolar disorder often report having suffered childhood abuse (physical and/or sexual). In one such study of 330 veterans with bipolar disorder, most of them men, almost half the men had undergone some kind of abuse as children.
An early feminist and famous writer in the 20th century, Virginia Woolf battled bipolar disorder from the age of 15 on, committing suicide in 1941. However, I know many people silently struggle with mental illness just as I do on a daily basis. My mother is bipolar and studies have estimated a 60-80% genetic heritability in regards to this disease.
